What the Dying Do

When Alex sees DEA Agent Tim Donovan on the street in Madison, it takes a full sixty seconds to recover from the shock. He looks at her steadily and walks around a corner without saying anything. From the slight motion of his head, she knows that he wants her to follow him.
They end up on a bench at a public park, not too far away. She sits beside him, not making eye contact. "You're supposed to be dead," she says, quietly so no one will overhear.
"So are you," he replies. "I guess we have that in common."
She risks looking at him, his profile turned away from her. "What are you doing here? Isn't this risky?"
"Yeah," he says, and finally looks back at her. He shrugs, just slightly, and his face is open, wanting in a way that makes her catch her breath. "I wanted to make sure you were okay." He pauses. "Are you?"
She can't think of anything to say, how to explain what being dead is like, but he looks like he already knows.
The dead make love quietly, regretfully, with the lights out, and one of them is gone in the morning. The other one is not surprised.
